Planet of the Prompt Monkeys
A Prompt Monkey is someone who can crank out impressive-looking work at record speed using AI tools, without really understanding the subject, the stakes, or the systems involved. They thrive in environments where speed is rewarded over substance and where no one bothers to ask follow-up questions. Armed with a few clever prompts and a well-polished tone, they generate output that looks like insight but folds under scrutiny. They are fluent in rephrasing, allergic to ambiguity, and always just one prompt away from sounding like an expert.
This is what’s going to happen.
Universities won’t mean to do it. That’s the funny part. They’ll be caught off guard, a little slow-footed, a little dazzled by the PR optics of “integrating AI across the curriculum.” But what they’ll actually do is unleash a small army of Prompt Monkeys into the workforce. Thousands of graduates who’ve mastered the art of typing clever things into chat boxes without ever learning how to think.
It’ll start quietly. The writing center will publish some awkward guidelines on “responsible AI use.” Professors will shrug and build a few “prompt-based” assignments. Students, of course, will seize the opportunity. They’re not dumb. They’re just responding to the incentives in front of them. If you can get an A in under six minutes and three rephrased prompts, why wouldn’t you? It’s not cheating. It’s augmentation (which is academic code for “please don’t make us deal with this yet”).
In no time, the Prompt Monkey becomes the default undergraduate. They respond to Slack messages by asking ChatGPT, “What’s a friendly way to say this?” They run team retrospectives with pre-written scripts from Claude. One even prompts a bot to write icebreaker questions for team happy hour. Peak civilization.
At first, managers are impressed. These kids are efficient. Confident. Eerily fluent in tools no one else has time to learn. The Prompt Monkeys get promoted fast. They show results. They deliver decks. They automate reports. Until something breaks.
Because inevitably, something will break. A client will call with a problem that wasn’t in the training data. A supplier will disappear. A law will change. A model will hallucinate. The team will need someone to explain what to do when none of the usual workflows apply.
That’s when the Prompt Monkeys freeze.
They weren’t trained for this part. They were trained to produce. Not to interpret. Not to decide. Not to own. They start prompting harder. “Give me a strategic response to sudden supply chain failure.” “Write a contingency plan for ethical layoffs.” “Sound confident while saying I have no idea what’s going on.” But the outputs get worse. More buzzwords. More padding. No judgment.
And here’s the part that stings: they won’t even know they’re in over their heads. Because AI makes everyone feel competent. That’s the trap. The Prompt Monkey isn’t just fooling others. They’re fooling themselves.
Meanwhile, the companies that bet on people who actually thought their way through school, who had to build ideas from scratch, not just coax them out of a model, those companies start to win. Slowly at first. Then suddenly. Because when the world gets weird (and it always does), you don’t need more interfaces. You need discernment.
This is what’s going to happen.
Universities will churn out wave after wave of Prompt Monkeys. The job market will absorb them for a while. But as the bar rises, as models improve, and as complexity mounts, the monkeys will hit their ceiling. Some will adapt. Most won’t. The banana supply isn’t infinite.

But here is the difference: I have forty years of experience behind the keyboard. I know what I am trying to say before I ever touch a prompt. The ideas, the structure, the judgment—they are mine. The tool helps me sharpen the knife, not choose the target.
That is the distinction. Using AI is not the problem. Using it instead of thinking is. Tools are only as good as the hands that guide them. So yes, this was written with help from a language model. But the hard part—the discernment, the synthesis, the voice, the responsibility—comes from me.
Which is exactly the point.
